Sri Lanka’s Angelo Matthews completes 5,000 runs in one-day internationals
|Sri Lanka’s premier all-rounder Angelo Matthews added another milestone in his illustrious career to complete 5,000 runs in one-day internationals. He also has 100 wickets to his name and scored a splendid century for Sri Lanka after India post gigantic 393 runs on the board. Rohit Sharma’s double ton helped India control the game with Matthews being the only batsman who showed defiance and courage to put up a fight. He was on 64 runs when he achieved the milestone of completing 5,000 runs in ODIs.
Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Matthews became the tenth Sri Lanka batsman to complete 5,000 runs in the 50-over format. He also joined Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Aravinda de Silva and to become fourth Sri Lankan player to complete 5,000 runs and 100 wickets in one-day cricket. Angelo Matthews has been in and out of the side as all-rounder has been plagued with injuries that have kept him out of the game in the last two years. The injuries also compounded problems for Sri Lanka as Matthews had to relinquish captaincy duties after being left out of the side on multiple occasions.
Sri Lanka have been suffering from a lean run in the format but Matthews has shown signs of form in the one-day series against India. Matthews is a key player in the setup at the moment as Sri Lanka would be keen he comes to form with the bat and ball. He has delivered superlative performances for Sri Lanka across all three formats. Though, his contributions with the ball have become less due to his hamstring problems in recent times.
Angelo Matthews holds a splendid average of over 40 with 35 half centuries to his name. He has only hundred in his one-day career for Sri Lanka. Matthews still has the talent to produce much greater performances for Sri Lanka and add more accolades to his cricketing career in the future.
