Australia overthrow India to climb to top spot in the ICC Test Team Rankings

Australia have managed to regain top spot in in both ICC Test and T20 Team Rankings released by International Council Cricket (ICC). India have been replaced from the top position in ICC Test Team Rankings for the first time since October 2016. Pakistan have also lost their top spot to Australia after dominating the T20 Team Rankings for 27 months. Since 2011, Australia have for the first time climbed to the top spot in the T20I Team Rankings.

Currently, Australia are number one in the table with 116 points, while New Zealand is a close second at 115 points in the ICC Test Rankings. India have dropped to third place in the table with 114 points. England are at fourth position in the Test Rankings with 105 points.

2016-17 season was removed from the Latest ICC Test Rankings which led to changes in the table. During that season, India had won 12 Test matches and lost only one, including series victories over England and Australia on home soil. On the other hand, Australia have suffered defeat at the hands of South Africa and India in that same season.

Despite dethroned from the top spot, India are comfortably ahead in the ICC Test Championship with 360 points to their name. Australia are second in the points table with 296 points.

On the other hand, Australia have climbed to top position in the T20I Rankings and have collected 278 points. England and India are placed second and third in the table with 268 and 266 points respectively. Pakistan’s recent poor form in the T20 format seen has seen drop down to fourth place and have 260 points to their name. South Africa are placed fifth in the T20I Rankings with 258 points to their name.

In the ICC ODI Team Rankings, 2019 World Cup winners, England continue to hold their top place with 127 points to their name. Second is Virat Kohli’s Indian team, who have 119 points to their name. New Zealand are at third place with 116 points, while Australia are placed at fifth place at 107 points.

After managing to draw the series in England and regain the Ashes, Australia have not suffered defeat in their last previous Test matches and managed to deliver convincing victories over Pakistan and New Zealand this summer. The T20I team led by Aaron Finch also managed to win five matches at home. They also managed to beat South Africa in a three-match T20I series played in South Africa earlier this season.

Australia Head Coach Justin Langer acknowledged the efforts of all the players and the performances they have put in for the side in the past 12 months. He said that the side still has a long way to go to become best time in the world. Langer stated that the goal for the side was to become no.1 ranked side in world cricket across three formats.
